Follow your baby’s sleep and eat times:

Newborns cannot tell time. They work on a simple cycle of eating, sleeping, and having their diaper changed. Watching for their natural patterns is the first step. Does your baby get sleepy after being awake for one hour? Do they start to fuss for food at a certain time? Writing these little clues down can help you see a pattern. When you follow this pattern, you put your baby to sleep or feed them just as they are getting ready for it. This stops them from becoming upset.

Learn your baby’s sleepy signals:

Your newborn mixes up day and night at first. You can help them learn the difference. Keep days bright with light and normal household sounds. Play and talk during the day. When night comes, make things different. Keep the lights low and the house quiet.

Try putting the baby down when drowsy:

This is a very helpful habit. Try to put your baby in their crib when they are sleepy but still awake. This lets them practice the skill of falling asleep on their own. They learn that their crib is a safe place for sleep. It is okay if they do not always drift off. Sometimes they will want your help. But giving them the chance to try is a wonderful gift.
